Keeping the Pathways Clear.

Safely Clearing the Snow at Home

Up here in the Grey-Bruce region - we know winter - and while winter brings picturesque landscapes covered in snow, it also brings the challenge of keeping the driveway, sidewalk and walkways clear. Proper snow removal is essential for safety, accessibility, and maintaining the integrity of our properties, not just for ourselves, but for pedestrians and visitors. Here’s a reminder to help effectively and efficiently shovel and clear snow at home.

1. Prepare for Snow Removal

Before stepping outside to tackle the snow, consider the following preparations:

  • Dress Appropriately: Wear warm, layered clothing, waterproof gloves, a hat, and insulated boots with good traction to prevent slips.

  • Use the Right Tools: A sturdy snow shovel, snow blower, and ice melt can make the job easier and more effective.

  • Stretch First: Snow shoveling is physically demanding. Warm up with stretches to prevent muscle strains and injuries.

2. Choose the Best Time to Shovel

  • Shovel Early and Often: Fresh snow is easier to remove than packed, icy snow. If possible, clear it before it accumulates too much.

  • Avoid Peak Cold Hours: Shovel during daylight hours when temperatures are slightly higher to prevent ice from forming.

  • Check the Forecast: If more snow is expected soon, wait until the snowfall slows or stops to avoid repeated efforts.

3. Effective Shoveling Techniques

  • Push Rather than Lift: Pushing snow to the side is less strenuous than lifting it. When lifting is necessary, use your legs, not your back.

  • Take Small Scoops: Heavy loads can strain your muscles and increase the risk of injury.

  • Switch Hands Periodically: Avoid overworking one side of your body by alternating hands.

  • Clear in Sections: Work in manageable sections rather than trying to tackle the entire area at once.

4. Managing Ice and Slippery Surfaces

  • Use Ice Melt or Sand: Apply salt, calcium chloride, or sand on icy spots to prevent slips.

  • Scrape Away Ice: Use an ice chopper or sturdy shovel to remove stubborn ice patches.

  • Create Safe Walking Paths: Ensure all entryways, steps, and sidewalks are well-cleared and treated.

5. Use a Snow Blower for Efficiency

If you have a snow blower, follow these tips:

  • Keep the Machine Maintained: Check oil levels, fuel, tires, pull-cord and blades before use.

  • Clear in a Pattern: Start in the middle and work outward to avoid throwing snow onto already-cleared areas.

  • Mind Your Surroundings: Be cautious of cars, people, and objects hidden under the snow.

6. Post-Shoveling Care

Cool Down and Stretch: Stretch your muscles to prevent stiffness and soreness.

  • Stay Hydrated: Even in cold weather, exertion can cause dehydration.

  • Change into Dry Clothes: Wet clothing can lead to hypothermia, so switch to dry attire after shoveling.

  • Take a break, relax and have a hot drink. Don’t rush the process - do it in phases if necessary.

Snow removal is a necessary winter task that, when done correctly, keeps your home safe and accessible. By preparing properly, using effective techniques, and taking care of your body, you can efficiently manage the snow without unnecessary strain or injury.

If it too much of a burden to take on, reach out to a neighbour for help. People are willing to help in a time of need!

Stay warm, stay safe, and enjoy the beauty of winter while keeping your pathways clear!
